Corinthians have confirmed the cancellation of João Pedro Tchoca’s loan to Torino, with the defender returning to the club.

The club said in a statement that it had received Torino’s formal notice of his return. Corinthians denied that the player lacked the conditions to play, noting he was listed for the match against Velo Clube on Sunday 25. He will rejoin the squad and resume training, but will not be available for the Supercopa Rei in Brasília after missing this week’s sessions.

The loan had been agreed last week, worth 1.5 million euros for the temporary move, with a further seven million euros to make it permanent. It would have been among the most lucrative centre-back deals in the club’s history.

With most European transfer windows closing on Monday and Tuesday, 2 and 3 February, the expectation is that Tchoca will remain available to Corinthians for a while longer.

On his return, he faces competition from André Ramalho, Gustavo Henrique, Gabriel Paulista and Cacá, as well as the sidelined Renato.
