Portsmouth are set to lose a Spurs loanee to Coventry City and Frank Lampard after Fabrizio Romano's most recent update.

Coventry City are set to strike their second loan deal in 24 hours, with Romain Esse of Crystal Palace to be joined by another Premier League capture to bolster Frank Lampard's ranks.

Coventry have enjoyed a strong start under Frank Lampard, remaining at the Championship's summit with only a handful of defeats and as the top scorers in the division. However, his side have started to wobble after a run of two wins in eight league matches.

For the most part this season, Lampard’s tactical tweaks have improved both attack and defence, producing their best early points tally in years and keeping the Sky Blues firmly in the promotion race. However, continuity from last season has also been crucial to their success.

In that sense, they will not want to disrupt a settled squad too much, but despite their strong league position, Coventry’s squad depth remains a concern in some areas, with a relatively small group of players covering many roles in attack. Injuries have already exposed thin numbers, particularly in the wide forward areas, limiting Lampard’s rotation.

Strengthening these areas could help maintain their promotion push through the season’s latter stages rather than relying on a core group of starters and burning them out. Coventry currently lack specialist wingers and wide forwards beyond Ephron Mason-Clark and Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, meaning competition and cover is limited when either is unavailable.

Frank Lampard to seal second Premier League winger on loan

When you've been top of the division for the last 18 matchdays in a row, it's hard to know exactly where to add in January. However, adding quality wide attackers should be a priority to boost creativity, provide some level of flexibility tactically, and protect the current incumbents on the flanks.

Targeting versatile wide players, potentially including the rumoured Romain Esse loan from Crystal Palace, aligns with this need and would give Lampard more attacking options as a result. One player who fits the bill is Spurs' Yang Min-Hyeok.

The 19-year-old South Korean international enjoyed a productive half-season loan with QPR in 2024/25 before joining Portsmouth and John Mousinho on loan in the summer. He penned a season-long loan that time around, but it appears it will be cut short with Coventry in mind.

Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Cov have agreed a loan deal today and that he is set to leave Portsmouth to link up with Lampard's side on loan instead. It will be the second Premier League winger secured on loan, should the deals both be signed and sealed in the coming days.

BBC reporter Chris Wise reports the loan spell was cut short yesterday, with Spurs recalling him due to not being content with the amount of game time he was getting. It's reported that Coventry have promised more minutes to both the player and his parent club.

Yang Min-Hyeok's career stats

He began his career with Gangwon FC, breaking into the first-team in 2024 and scored 12 goals in 38 K League 1 matches at a young age. He won the league’s Young Player of the Year award before signing for Tottenham in July 2024, with the youngster joining them in January 2025.

Spurs immediately loaned him twice and he has contributed to goals already from a young age. Internationally, Yang progressed through Korea’s youth teams and made his senior debut in 2025, too. The next chapter of his career will be with Coventry instead.
