Former Celtic defender Erik Sviatchenko has provided new insight into Wilfried Nancy’s rigid managerial style, describing it as a strict “all or nothing” philosophy…

The Danish international – who is approaching 100 appearances in Major League Soccer – faced Nancy’s Columbus Crew side on several occasions, giving him direct experience of the French coach’s methods.

There had been doubts about Nancy’s suitability for Celtic, with questions raised over whether his success in MLS could translate to a very different footballing environment. In the end, those concerns proved to be well-founded.

Looking back on the short-lived spell, Sviatchenko pointed to the disastrous 33-day period in which Celtic lost six of eight matches, including a League Cup final against St Mirren and two decisive games in the title race against the Ibrox club and Hearts – both at Celtic Park.

Speaking via fan media outlet Celts Are Here, Sviatchenko said: “I was surprised that it only lasted 33 days. It was a really short period. That’s insane. It was a quick fling in that sense.”

“Of course, the quality he brought at Columbus Crew in MLS was very high. I played against them and the level they were playing at was very good. So it wasn’t a case of someone coming in without pedigree.”

“He’s a character who wants to do things his way. He came in and changed the formation quickly and played players out of position in a short space of time.”

“During the season, when you need to win games, that can be difficult. It’s easy to look back and say he should have made smaller changes and waited until preseason to fully implement his ideas. But sometimes you trust what has worked for you before. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.”

Sviatchenko added: “I spoke to a former teammate who worked with him at Columbus. He said he was a great coach, but also very set in his way of doing things.

“It was more like his way or nothing. When you’re in a period where results are needed and you’re trying to make big changes, it can be difficult.”

“As a player, you need clarity. Are we trying to win now or are we building something? There were results that shouldn’t have happened and that has continued at times. It can feel like something is weighing on the players.”

Nancy’s tenure at Celtic got off to a grim start on paper, and ultimately unfolded in the most damaging way possible facilitated by the mute CEO and the missing principal shareholder.

Following a positive interim spell under Martin O’Neill, expectations were cautiously optimistic, but Nancy’s opening week quickly derailed momentum with defeats to Hearts, Roma and then St Mirren.

The early setbacks proved difficult to recover from, and a 2-1 defeat to Dundee United should have been curtains after large sections of the away support were already questioning his position.

Although victories against Aberdeen and Livingston offered brief encouragement and signs of improvement, they came too late. A decisive run of fixtures against Motherwell and the Rangers ended in further defeats, bringing Nancy’s short and shocking spell in charge to an end.
