Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has reportedly received an approach to return to the dugout, just two weeks after he was sacked by Bayer Leverkusen.

Ten Hag relieved of his duties by Leverkusen

After United dismissed Ten Hag in November last year, the Dutchman finally returned to football management in May, as Leverkusen appointed him to succeed Xabi Alonso.

Ten Hag put pen to paper on a two-year contract with Leverkusen.

However, Ten Hag was brutally let go by Leverkusen after just two Bundesliga games. Leverkusen pulled the trigger after their 3-3 draw with Werder Bremen.

Leverkusen conceded two late goals, including a painful 94th-minute equaliser, despite having a numerical advantage. Nicklas Stark had been shown a red card in the second half.

Ten Hag’s other Bundesliga clash ended in a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Hoffenheim on the opening weekend of the campaign.

It later emerged that the 55-year-old struggled to connect with the squad and clashed with the hierarchy, largely due to his attempts to reshape their transfer plans and push players from his own SEG agency.

Rather than let an unpromising situation drag on, Leverkusen decided to sever ties as soon as possible.

However, just two weeks later, Ten Hag is already being lined up for another managerial job, and it’s a familiar one to him – FC Twente.

Ten Hag a candidate for FC Twente role

FC Twente are on the hunt for a new manager after parting ways with Joseph Oosting earlier this month.

According to PSV Inside [via SportWitness], FC Twente are experiencing some difficulties in their search for a replacement but they’re still looking at a number of options.

It’s understood that Ten Hag is one of three coaches who have been approached. The other two are Mark van Bommel and former United assistant Rene Hake.

However, John van den Brom is named as the “leading candidate” to assume the position.

Ten Hag played for FC Twente and even began his coaching career there, working with the youth sides before serving as assistant to Fred Rutten and later Steve McClaren.
