Gent winger Helio Varela is set to leave the club . The 23-year-old is, according to HLN, set to move to Israel and join up with Maccabi Tel Aviv. Varela only joined Gent last summer from Portuguese side Portimonense but is clearly not seen as someone head coach Ivan Leko is looking to rely on this season. The side have had an indifferent start to the season, with just one win in five games. Leko and Gent have drawn two and lost two of their other Pro League games.
Varela only made 18 appearances for Gent since joining last summer, scoring twice and providing one assist. This is a far cry from the stellar 2023/2024 season he had in Portugal with Portimonense. The Cape Verde international played 37 games in all competitions for the side, scoring six goals and grabbing three assists in the Liga Portugal.
Varela will be hoping that his nation can qualify for the World Cup for the first time. Cape Verde are currently top of their qualification group in the African section of qualification, with four wins, one draw and one defeat from their first six games.
