Pep Guardiola is stepping down as Manchester City manager after ten years in the job and has discussed what could be next in store for him.
The Catalan has overseen an unprecedented era of success at the Etihad. He led his side to 20 major trophies in a decade, alongside breaking countless records. However, the tactician feels that now is the right time to step away.
Given his stature in the game, speculation is inevitable on what Guardiola’s future holds. A sabbatical is anticipated but, after that, it is unclear what is to come.
“For a while, for a while, for a while, I will not be a manager,” he answered on whether he would consider a return to City in the future. “That is the only thing. Otherwise, I would be here, still here.
“I deserve, honestly, to take a break.”
Partly fuelled by his own past comments, it is believed that Guardiola could turn his hand to international management for his next challenge.
“I don’t have any absolute plan about my future,” he said when asked if he would ever be interested in managing England. “Except to rest and to recover the time that I missed with my kids, even though they are grown. And many things I have not done that I want to do.
“So I don’t think for one second about anything related to football for the next time. For the next years, I don’t think about it.
“I need to rest, I need to reflect. I need to see what happened in my 17, 18 years – in my time in Barcelona, in Germany and here. And after we see what happens.
“I don’t have a plan. It’s just to rest and do a lot of things I want to do that I didn’t do in the past. Stupid things that I want to do, and that’s all.”
Admitting that his answer was not a no, Guardiola smiled: “Yeah.”
