Hull City, who will face Leeds United in 2026/27 in the top flight, are racing to avoid a points deduction after overspending, a situation that could slow a potential Elland Road exit.
According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, owner Acun Ilicali told supporters earlier in June the club has overspent and must sell players before 1 July to avoid a possible sanction. Their Wembley play-off final win ensured a reunion with Leeds in the top flight next season. Leeds faced a similar Profitability and Sustainability Rules situation when they failed to win their own Wembley final, selling Archie Gray to Spurs for £40m before the reporting deadline.
That focus on sales will almost certainly put incoming business on hold, including any move to sign last season's loanee Joe Gelhardt. The Leeds attacker hit 10 goals before Christmas for Hull, then an injury checked his momentum and he added only four more before the play-offs.
He did score the goal that made safe the semi-final win over Millwall, sealing a place in the Wembley final against Middlesbrough. A final tally of 15 goals and five assists might persuade Hull he is worth taking into their survival fight.
Gelhardt, 24, has one year left on his contract and a permanent departure is all but inevitable after limited chances at Leeds and three loans in three years. Other loanees who could depart include Max Wober, who also has a year remaining, Largie Ramazani and Isaac Schmidt.
