Former Inter President Massimo Moratti has left intensive care, as he continues his recovery in hospital from a bout of pneumonia.

The 80-year-old was rushed to hospital with breathing difficulties on August 27, which were so severe that he had to be intubated.

As confirmed by his family, he has been breathing autonomously since Saturday, and has now been moved out of the intensive care department of the Istituto Humanitas in Rozzano.

A heavy smoker for so much of his life, Moratti also had heart surgery a couple of years ago and celebrated his 80th birthday in May.

An Inter supporter since childhood, when his father Angelo was at the helm of the European Cup in the 1960s, Massimo Moratti took over ownership from Ernesto Pellegrini in 1995.

He oversaw the legendary achievement of winning the Treble in 2010, the Champions League, Scudetto and Coppa Italia in a single season under coach Jose Mourinho.

In total, he won 16 trophies at Inter before selling the club to Erick Thohir in 2013.
