Italian media heavily criticized referee Federico La Penna after Inter Milan’s 3-2 win over Juventus, calling his red card for Pierre Kalulu a “sensational blunder” in the Derby d’Italia.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInternews, the Rome-based official made several questionable decisions throughout the match at San Siro.
The paper first highlighted an early ninth-minute incident involving Petar Sučić and Fabio Miretti, describing the contact as borderline.
Shortly after, La Penna correctly booked Alessandro Bastoni for a direct challenge on Francisco Conceição.
The newspaper found no issues with the goals that made it 1-0 and 1-1. However, it strongly disagreed with the first yellow card shown to Pierre Kalulu.
The report argued that although Nicolò Barella reached the ball first, the contact did not warrant a booking.

The most controversial moment came in the 42nd minute.
The outlet described it as a “clamorous mistake.” Kalulu appeared to brush Bastoni lightly with his hand.
The Inter defender went down, and La Penna produced another yellow card, reducing Juventus to ten men.
According to the report, the referee had a clear view of the incident and still made the wrong call. “It is never a yellow,” the paper insisted.
The criticism did not stop there. In the second half, Carlos Augusto challenged Weston McKennie inside the area.
The newspaper noted that Augusto failed to play the ball and made contact high on McKennie’s leg, suggesting Juventus had grounds to claim a penalty.
