Inter Milan are stepping up their pursuit of Marco Palestra and believe they can land the Atalanta wing-back for €45m – below La Dea’s €50m asking price – by leveraging the Italian’s preference to remain in Serie A over advances from Manchester City, Arsenal, Newcastle United, and Liverpool.
According to Sky Sport Italia, via Football Italia, Inter are confident that Palestra’s own inclinations will give them a decisive edge in what has become a genuinely crowded transfer race. The Nerazzurri have been tracking the 21-year-old for an extended period and believe a deal at €45m is achievable despite having seen an opening bid of €40m plus add-ons rejected by Atalanta.
Palestra spent the 2025–26 season on loan at Cagliari, flourishing in a wing-back role and earning his first senior Italy caps in the process. That rapid emergence has driven Atalanta’s valuation north and drawn interest from across Europe. As SempreInter reported in April, the competitive landscape around Palestra had already intensified significantly, with Arsenal among the English clubs circling La Dea’s prized asset.
Atalanta would prefer a bidding war to erupt between the Premier League heavyweights, which would push the fee toward their €50m threshold. The financial firepower of City, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Newcastle is not a factor Inter can match pound for pound. Indeed, it is precisely why the Nerazzurri are leaning so heavily on the human element of this negotiation.
Palestra is reported to believe that Inter represent the right environment for the next stage of his development, with the promise of regular first-team football a central consideration. Furthermore, the presence of Federico Dimarco strengthens the pitch considerably – the pair are widely expected to be the cornerstone of Italy’s wing-back axis for years to come, and playing alongside Dimarco at club level carries obvious appeal.
Therefore, Inter’s confidence is not unfounded optimism. It is grounded in a reading of the player’s priorities that Atalanta’s preferred English suitors simply cannot replicate. The Nerazzurri have reportedly earmarked the majority of their initial summer budget for this deal, with a five-year contract worth around €2m net per season ready to be tabled.
Palestra would arrive as the direct replacement for Denzel Dumfries, who underwent a medical with Real Madrid today to formalise his departure under the €20m release clause. The right flank must be rebuilt. Inter have identified their man.
A club-to-club summit between Inter and Atalanta is expected to clarify whether the €5m gap between offer and asking price can be bridged without a full auction. Inter are watching that threshold closely. The player’s preference, for now, remains their most powerful negotiating tool.
