Joe Cole has been talking about Newcastle United.
The former Liverpool and England winger discussing Wednesday night’s match.
Joe Cole on the chances of Eddie Howe’s side winning, as they take on Spurs.
The Newcastle United boss set to face Tottenham at home for a fourth time since arriving at St James’ Park.
NUFC having won all three of the previous SJP clashes under Eddie Howe, scoring 12 goals in the three home victories over Spurs, conceding only two.
Joe Cole talking to Paddy Power ahead of Newcastle United facing Spurs in the Carabao Cup:
“I’m just coming down on Newcastle to win against Tottenham.
“I watched both first hand in Europe recently and I just feel that Newcastle are a bit stronger in terms of depth.
“Sandro Tonali, for example, didn’t play at the weekend and it’ll be buzzing as it always is at St James’ Park.
“Don’t forget they’re the holders of this so I fancy them to win 2-1.
“Newcastle to win and both teams to score…”
My thoughts
Joe Cole with two big predictions there, Newcastle United to concede BUT most importantly, win and go through into the last eight of the Carabao Cup.
All eyes will be on the starting elevens when they are named, with it appearing clear that both managers will rotate to an extent.
Having said that…ten months ago for the Carabao Cup quarter-final match, Eddie Howe played the exact same eleven against Brentford on Wednesday 18 December 2024, as he had done four days earlier in the 4-0 Premier League home victory over Leicester. As Joe Cole says, Eddie Howe with the luxury as well of having Sandro Tonali back available after illness restricted him to only half an hour on Saturday against Fulham and sitting on the bench for the entirety of the win over Benfica.
Thomas Frank was the Brentford manager back on 18 December 2024 and he made five changes that night, United winning 3-1 (Wissa scored the Bees’ consolation in the 91st minute when they were 3-0 down).
This time, United have the advantage of having four days between matches, whilst Spurs have a day less preparation and recovery after their 3-0 win at Everton on Sunday.
After a tough opening to the season, Eddie Howe’s side have won four of their last five games in all competitions, five of their last seven. Those last seven matches seeing United score 17 goals. Whilst seven of the 13 NUFC games so far this season have seen clean sheets for United.
