For defender Kwanda Mngonyama, a new chapter in his professional journey began not in a boardroom, but on the international stage. After his departure from AmaZulu FC left him as a free agent, the former South Africa youth international has revealed how a pivotal national team duty became the catalyst for his move to the Middle East.

Following the expiration of his contract with Usuthu, Mngonyama's path first led him to a brief assessment period with Siwelele FC. However, his career trajectory shifted significantly when he answered the call to represent South Africa at the CHAN tournament in Kampala, Uganda. Seizing the opportunity, the 32-year-old defender cemented his value by starting all four of Bafana Bafana's matches, showcasing his skills on a continental platform.

This impressive display did not go unnoticed. The exposure from the tournament successfully opened the door to his next venture, earning him a contract with Al Ittihad Sports Club, a team that competes in Bahrain’s second tier. For Mngonyama, a veteran of the SA Under-23 team that competed at the 2016 Rio Olympics, this move marks an exciting new challenge.

What did Mngonyama say about his new plan?

Mngonyama revealed that his move was a direct result of his performances on the continental stage, a opportunity that would have otherwise remained out of reach. He shared the exact moment his new club took notice, telling the national broadcaster:

“If it weren’t for the CHAN tournament, this wouldn’t have been possible.”

He went on to explain the unique role the club's technical staff envisions for him, drawing a flattering comparison to a footballing legend. The club's long-term vision for his career was also made clear, positioning him as a valuable asset with significant potential for growth and future transfer.

“The coach here told me that they spotted me during the game against Guinea, as well as in the qualification match against Malawi. They’re modelling my game on Yaya Toure here in Bahrain, and see me as an investment, who could be spotted by some of the big clubs in the big leagues in the Gulf region.”
