Leeds loanee Max Wober has withdrawn from Austria duty amid ongoing injury problems, further stalling his season-long spell at Werder Bremen.
Salzburger Nachrichten reported on Sunday that the 28-year-old left the national team’s Vienna base before Tuesday’s friendly against South Korea, having been troubled by muscle problems and not due to feature.
Wober joined Werder on loan for 2025/26 and has played only once, a DFB-Pokal defeat in August. A hamstring issue sidelined him for four months. A comeback in a friendly against St Pauli early this year brought a calf setback, later diagnosed as a muscle fibre tear with tendon involvement, and he was due to see a London specialist before the break.
“After the friendly match [vs St. Pauli], I started having problems with my calf. Many things didn’t go optimally during my rehab.” He told the 1x1Sport Fußballtrainer podcast.
“I’m not far from being fit, but I still can’t get back to running and playing football completely pain-free. I hope this appointment will help me and that I can be back on the pitch in two weeks.”
Werder hold an option to make the loan permanent, although a single appearance means a full transfer looks unlikely. As it stands, Wober is due back at Leeds this summer with 12 months left on his Elland Road deal.
