Leeds United loanee Max Wober has withdrawn from Austria duty amid ongoing muscle problems, the latest setback in a stalled season at Werder Bremen.

The centre-back joined Werder on loan for the 2025/26 campaign and has not played since his debut in a DFB-Pokal defeat in August. A hamstring issue ruled the 28-year-old out for four months, and a midwinter friendly against St Pauli brought a further setback.

Calf pain was later diagnosed as a muscle fibre tear with tendon involvement, and he was due to see a London specialist before the international break. Salzburger Nachrichten reported on Sunday that he left the national team’s Vienna base before Tuesday’s friendly with South Korea, having not been due to feature.

“After the friendly match [vs St. Pauli], I started having problems with my calf. At first, they said it was a minor strain, but it took longer than expected,” he told the 1x1Sport Fußballtrainer podcast.

“I’m not far from being fit, but I still can’t get back to running and playing football completely pain-free. I hope this appointment will help me and that I can be back on the pitch in two weeks.”

Werder hold an option to make the loan permanent, although a single appearance makes that unlikely. As things stand, he will report back to Leeds in the summer with 12 months remaining on his Elland Road contract.
