Max Wober has withdrawn from Austria duty amid ongoing muscle problems, compounding a troubled loan at Werder Bremen.

Salzburger Nachrichten reported he left the national team’s Vienna base before Tuesday’s friendly against South Korea. He was not due to feature.

The 28-year-old joined Bremen on loan for 2025/26 and has played once, debuting in a DFB-Pokal defeat in August. A hamstring injury sidelined him for four months, then a friendly against St. Pauli earlier this year brought a setback.

Calf pain was later diagnosed as a muscle fibre tear with tendon involvement, and he was set to see a London specialist before the break. His call-up had hinted at progress, but the issue appears to be ongoing.

“After the friendly match [vs St. Pauli], I started having problems with my calf,” he told the 1x1Sport Fußballtrainer podcast.

“I hope this appointment will help me and that I can be back on the pitch in two weeks.”

Bremen hold an option to buy, although his single appearance makes a permanent move unlikely. As it stands, he is due to report back to Leeds in the summer with 12 months left on his Elland Road deal.
