Leeds United are prepared to battle Manchester United for a midfielder this summer, with the Daily Mail reporting that they are weighing up a bid for Southampton’s Shea Charles, whose contract expires next year.
The Whites have started the summer positively by securing captain Ethan Ampadu on a long-term deal.
Leeds appear well stocked in midfield, with Anton Stach, Ilia Gruev, Ao Tanaka, Sean Longstaff and Charlie Crew among the options. Tanaka’s future is uncertain, so the club are seeking further reinforcements.
Southampton are under pressure to sell the 22-year-old and value him at £20m. It is unclear whether Daniel Farke’s side will meet that price.
Leeds have considered other targets, including Hidemasa Morita, but attention has turned to Charles. He fits the brief as a defensive midfielder and a homegrown player from Manchester City’s academy, offering potential resale value.
Whether Leeds can close a deal, and fend off Manchester United, remains to be seen.
