Liverpool and Rennes have finalised a €70m agreement for central defender Jérémy Jacquet, to take effect in July on a five-year deal.

According to L'Équipe, the unusual delayed transfer structure reflects economic constraints, chiefly financial fair play, after Liverpool sought to close the deal in winter without outlay before the summer.

Liverpool signalled early in talks that a deferred move was their preference, while Rennes wanted to retain the France under-21 international, five caps, through to season’s end.

Had Liverpool bought him now then loaned him back, Rennes would have expected an early first instalment. The agreed deferral instead lets Liverpool book the deal differently.

Liverpool also rarely buy players to loan them straight back, and a loan would have imposed constraints on Rennes, including regular observers and requests for physical and medical data.

If the transfer had been announced on the second of February with an immediate loan back, Jacquet would not have been registered in time for Rennes’ Coupe de France last-16 tie at Marseille on Tuesday at 21:10. Registration typically takes two to three days after such transactions. Under the agreed model, he remains on Rennes’ books until the summer, before committing to the Reds until 2031.
