Santos defender Luan Peres has been ruled out of Sunday’s 15th-round Campeonato Brasileiro match against Red Bull Bragantino at Vila Belmiro after a fracture to the fourth metacarpal in his left hand was detected hours before kick-off.

According to Diario Do Peixe, the centre-back suffered the problem during the derby with Palmeiras on 2 May, but it was only identified on Sunday.

Head coach Cuca had planned to start Luan Peres. The expectation was that he would return in place of João Ananias, who began the draw with Recoleta in the Copa Sudamericana.

With the number 14 sidelined, Adonis Frías will partner Lucas Veríssimo in central defence.

The delay in diagnosis was linked to an initial small crack in the bone, and the player had reported pain since the derby. Internally it was treated as the after effects of a knock, so further tests were not conducted straight away. An examination was finally performed after the pain worsened.
