Lucas Digne is to rejoin Paris Saint-Germain after the World Cup on a three-year contract, 11 years after his first spell. The 32-year-old previously played from 2013 to 2015, then spent 2015-16 on loan at Roma.

The move has been prepared quietly for about four weeks. Daily Mail reports that the move first surfaced.

Luis Campos had prioritised a younger deputy to Nuno Mendes, with PSG even questioning a 19 to 22-year-old when Mendes is only 24. Digne’s profile appeals, French, experienced and reliable, with a release clause under €10m.

Luis Enrique knows him from Barcelona in 2016-17, when he played 26 matches, and values his mentality, seeing the 62-cap international as a consummate professional. The decision to accelerate came about three weeks ago.

After eight years and 253 Premier League matches, he welcomed the chance to complete the circle in a familiar environment now markedly changed from 2013 to 2016. He also envisages a big-brother role alongside Mendes.

He had not discussed the talks with his France team-mates, who learned of the imminent signing in their Dallas hotel rooms on Monday morning, followed by good-natured teasing.

A few months ago he gave his son Isaho a surprise birthday ticket for PSG versus Toulouse at the Parc des Princes. In the coming months, Isaho could be watching him on the pitch in the colours of his favourite club.
