Lucas Paquetá has paid tribute to Filipe Luís after the coach’s sacking by Flamengo, crediting him as the driving force behind his return to the club.
The player said in a social media post on Wednesday that the coach was the biggest reason he came back. He praised Filipe’s loyalty, dedication and love for his work, thanked him as a Flamengo fan and a friend, and wished him further success.
Filipe Luís was dismissed in the early hours of Tuesday after an 8-0 win over Madureira in the Carioca semi-final. On Wednesday he visited Ninho do Urubu and cried while saying goodbye to the players.
Paquetá, the most expensive signing in Brazilian football history and the last player to join Flamengo this season, benefited from the coach’s influence in recruitment. When the midfielder signalled he wanted to return, Filipe pressed the board to authorise the investment.
Flamengo have appointed Portuguese coach Leonardo Jardim to replace Filipe Luís. He is at Ninho do Urubu to sign his contract and have an initial meeting with the squad.
