Richard Ríos will return to Benfica with little time to rest as the club speed into the new season. The Colombian midfielder comes back after Colombia’s last 16 exit to Switzerland on penalties, having come on in the second half.
According to Glorioso 1904, he will report back to Benfica Campus as another arrival from the World Cup, with Schjelderup also at the tournament. Marco Silva is set to call on the 26-year-old for the first leg of the Europa League second qualifying round on 23 July, and he is due to feature in friendlies beforehand.
The tight schedule means the number 20 will again miss a conventional break, making it a second successive summer without time off.
When he joined from Palmeiras last season, he flew straight to Lisbon days after the Club World Cup, having even played a Brazilian Serie A match on 16 July 2025. He was unveiled on 22 July, then featured in the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira on 31 July.
Since July last year Ríos has played 61 matches without a rest. Counting from July 2024 across Palmeiras, Benfica and Colombia, he has 128 games in his legs, which could mean fatigue becomes more sudden and frequent next season.
