Sheffield United vs Norwich City – Preview

Norwich City are the latest team to travel to Bramall Lane and try to halt this in-form Sheffield United team on Tuesday evening.

The Blades are in exceptional form, unbeaten in their last five games, winning four of those, and keeping four clean sheets. They’ve also netted 13 goals in the last four matches which is more than they managed to score all season before this run (11). After easily dismantling Stoke City 4-0 last weekend at home, some supporters and even neutrals are considering United for the play-offs, despite still being closer to the drop zone than the top six.

Norwich City are in deep trouble. After losing away at Watford 3-2, they remain 23rd and are five points adrift of safety. The concerning thing for the Canaries is they haven’t kept a clean sheet since August 30th, a 2-0 away win against ten-man Blackburn Rovers. Considering how clinical United have been in front of goal in recent weeks, they could be fearing the worst, especially on a ground they haven’t won at since 2017.

Team News

Ben Mee had an operation on his hand last week after playing multiple games with it in a cast. The man who replaced him at the weekend was Mark McGuinness, and while he scored the opening goal for United against Stoke, he was substituted at half-time due to a minor ankle injury.

In more positive news, Oliver Arblaster made the bench on Saturday, though he was an unused sub, as was Tahith Chong.

Norwich will be without Harry Darling after he accumulated his fifth yellow card of the season at Watford. Meanwhile, they could have over half a dozen players out due to injury. Jose Cordoba has been dealing with a hamstring issue while Mirko Topic and Ante Crnac both have ACL injuries. The experienced Jeffrey Schlupp and Jack Stacey are also doubtful.

SHEFFIELD, ENGLAND – NOVEMBER 26: Gustavo Hamer of Sheffield United celebrates scoring a goal to make it 3-0 to Sheffield United during the Sky Bet Championship match between Sheffield United and Portsmouth at Bramall Lane on November 26, 2025 in Sheffield, England. There are so many standout performers for United at the moment. Femi Seriki has looked outstanding at right-back, and he offers a genuine overlapping threat on the ball because of his pace. Jairo Riedewald has looked composed and a class above the Championship since coming into the team, and as a result, Sydie Peck’s performances have greatly improved.

The player I expect to feature heavily against Norwich is Gustavo Hamer. Hamer comes into this game after a strong 70 minutes against Stoke. The Dutchman registered an assist for United’s opening goal, and he ended the game with five key passes and four out of eight accurate crosses.

The Canaries are one of the worst teams at aerial duels success rate (47%), and they are just one of six other teams that have given up 50+ headed shots this season. So Hamer’s eyes will be lighting up at every opportunity to whip a cross in against a very very suspect defence, especially with their best defender being suspended for this game (Darling).

WATFORD, ENGLAND – DECEMBER 6: Josh Sargent of Norwich City celebrates scoring his team’s first goal 0-1 during the Sky Bet Championship match between Watford and Norwich City at Vicarage Road on December 6, 2025 in Watford, England. (Photo by Sally Rawlins/Getty Images)

For as bad as Norwich City have been, Josh Sargent has kept them at least somewhat competitive in games this term. The American forward has netted six goals and provided three assists in 19 starts, including a goal last weekend in their 3-2 loss at Watford.

Sargent is a genuine threat due to his intelligent movement where he can drop off the back line and come short for the ball, but he can also play on the last shoulder of the defence where he can use his acceleration to latch onto through balls. The USA international has registered the seventh-most non-penalty expected goals out of every Championship player, so it is not as if he’s getting starved of chances. And when one does fall his way, he often takes it.

United will likely have to partner up Japhet Tanganga and Tyler Bindon due to the minor injuries to McGuinness and Mee. Whilst they have played with each other before, and they recently got 45 minutes together in the second half against Stoke, there still could be some slight communication issues which Sargent will be hoping to exploit.

My Prediction

For all of the doom and gloom regarding Norwich, they are still performing to a good standard offensively. United are statistically the sixth-best creative team in the league and Norwich are eighth-best. But the Canaries are being let down by an extremely poor defence that is third-worst in the division (31.7 non-penalty expected goals). And this will be even more concerning because of the Darling suspension.

While Norwich do create a lot of good chances, they come up against a Blades back line that have kept four clean sheets in their last five, and they are statistically now a top six defence after greatly struggling in the first two and a half months of the season.

I can’t see how Norwich City keep a clean sheet on Tuesday evening against a free scoring Blades. And for that reason Sheffield United can win this game by another two-goal margin at least.
