Melker Ellborg has missed out on Sweden’s World Cup squad after Graham Potter named a 26-man group earlier this week, while many nations are still on provisional lists.
According to Sunderland Echo, the uncapped goalkeeper was drafted earlier this year when an injury to Robin Roefs opened the door at Sunderland and some of Potter’s options were sidelined.
Roefs has since returned to the starting XI and Potter has opted for greater experience. Kristoffer Nordfeldt of AIK, Viktor Johansson of Stoke City and Jacob Widell Zetterstrom of Derby County are the goalkeepers selected.
Nordfeldt rejoined the squad for the play-offs in March and looks most likely to be the number one this summer.
Despite Ellborg’s omission, Sunderland could still be strongly represented. Granit Xhaka, Omar Alderete, Habib Diarra and Nilson Angulo are regulars for Switzerland, Paraguay, Senegal and Ecuador, all qualified, and if fit those players are certain picks.
Sadiki is a DR Congo regular and will be involved if fit, while Robin Roefs could be selected by the Netherlands. Brian Brobbey and Lutsharel Geertruida are strong contenders for that squad after recent selections by Ronald Koeman.
Chemsdine Talbi made his first start for Morocco in a friendly on Tuesday night and, having been in their recent AFCON squad, seems likely to travel this summer.
Wilson Isidor will also travel after opting for Haiti, making his first appearances and scoring his first goal during the current break. Simon Adingra and Arthur Masuaku could feature for Ivory Coast and DR Congo, though their Sunderland status before the summer remains in doubt.
