Derbies, heavy wins over Juventus and a European scalp headline this week in Lazio history, alongside Alessandro Nesta’s birthday and a tribute to Carlo Parola.
According to The Laziali, on 18 March 2001 Lazio crushed Juventus 4-1 as Pavel Nedved and Hernan Crespo scored twice. On 17 March 2004 Stefano Fiore netted both in a 2-0 Coppa Italia final first leg after Cesar missed a penalty.
Derby joy came on 18 March 1979 when Nicoli won Roma 1-2 in the last second, and on 19 March 2008 as Valon Behrami sealed a 3-2 classic in the 92nd minute. On 22 March 2000 Sinisa Mihajlovic’s free kick clinched Chelsea 1-2 Lazio and a quarter-final place.
Match in focus, 22 March 1964, Juventus 0-3 Lazio. After beating Modena and drawing with Messina to reach 11th, Lazio stunned Juve when Giancarlo Morrone crossed for Graziano Landoni’s first Serie A goal on two minutes, then Mario Maraschi volleyed a second.
Idilio Cei saved from Omar Sivori and Gianfranco Zigoni, then a 41st-minute free kick routine ended with Morrone for 0-3 at half-time. Maraschi went close from range on 52 minutes, Juve wilted and Lazio controlled, a margin matched in Turin again only in 1995.
We remember Carlo Parola, the Juventus great immortalised by Panini’s bicycle-kick logo. A stalwart from 1939 to 1954, he later coached Juve to two scudetti and two Coppe Italia, returned in 1974 for another title, and died on 22 March 2000.
Birthdays this week include Alessandro Nesta on 19 March.
