Marseille’s packed autumn schedule is beginning to take its toll on Roberto De Zerbi’s squad. With seven games to play in 21 days, the Italian coach has been forced to juggle an increasingly threadbare squad, particularly in attack, where long-term absentees Amine Gouiri and Hamed Junior Traoré have left him short of options.
During Saturday’s defeat away to Lens, De Zerbi suffered another scare when Timothy Weah pulled up holding his thigh and was forced off early. The American has been one of OM’s most reliable performers, but according to La Provence, early indications suggest his injury is not serious, though his participation against Angers on Wednesday remains uncertain. While Weah’s knock appears minor, De Zerbi continues to feel the absence of Amine Gouiri – who underwent shoulder surgery last week and is expected to be sidelined for three months. Despite modest statistics this season, the former Lyon and Rennes forward brings a profile the squad sorely lacks — the ability to hold the ball under pressure, link play in tight spaces, and help OM move up the pitch when under stress.Further up the pitch, Hamed Junior Traoré has been edging closer to a return after a persistent thigh problem. The Ivorian, who has featured just once since joining from Bournemouth, is back running at La Commanderie and could rejoin full training this week. Geoffrey Kondogbia continues to recover from a calf issue, while Facundo Medina (ankle) remains sidelined. The Argentine defender’s return is pencilled in for early December.
