The source reveals two reasons that could prompt Bruno and United to part ways. First of all, the player will be 32 next summer, so if he wishes to embark on a ‘new challenge’ before the inevitable decline, this would be the right time to do so.

As for MUFC, next summer will represent their last chance to cash in on the midfielder for a considerable transfer fee, as his contract will expire in June 2027, albeit it contains an automatic renewal option.

Over the past few years, Bruno has been constantly linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League. Last summer, his agent held extensive talks with Al-Hilal, but the player eventually chose to remain in Manchester.

But while sources expect other Saudi giants will enquire about Fernandes next summer, Wheeler and Salt insist that the playmaker will favour a move to a top European club.

After being heavily dependent on the Portuguese for six years, the transition will undoubtedly be difficult for Man Utd.

However, this may be a necessary step to fund the arrival of a new midfielder, and perhaps make some room for Kobbie Mainoo, who has been starving for playing time, before his Old Trafford career becomes unsalvageable.
