U20 World Cup: Xabi Alonso shuts the door on Mastantuono

Argentinian wonderkid Franco Mastantuono will not feature in the U20 World Cup in Chile (September 27 to October 19). The reason? Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso has decided to keep him in his squad.

Speaking at a press conference, the Spanish coach was unequivocal: "If it’s up to us, he stays with us." Mastantuono, 18, who joined from River Plate this summer, has already established himself as an undisputed starter for the Madrid side.

Losing him for nearly a month would have deprived Real of a key player at a crucial point in the season. Despite pressure from the Argentinian federation, Los Blancos enforced their right: clubs are not obliged to release players for the U20 World Cup.

This decision, legal but controversial, is a major blow for Argentina, who will have to defend their chances in Chile without one of their brightest prospects.
