Sunderland visit Oxford United on Sunday in the FA Cup fourth round, only their second in 11 years. They got here by beating Everton on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
As reported by Sunderland Echo, their previous fourth-round run in 2022/23 went via a 2-1 win at Shrewsbury, a 1-1 draw at Fulham, then a 3-2 replay defeat at the Stadium of Light. Here is where that side are now.
Anthony Patterson was first choice through promotion, then lost out to Robin Roefs and joined Millwall on loan in January. Trai Hume and Dan Ballard remain regulars in the top flight, Danny Batth has since played for Norwich, Blackburn and now Derby, and Aji Alese is on loan at Portsmouth.
Patrick Roberts stayed influential, then joined Birmingham City permanently in January. Dan Neil has moved to Ipswich on loan and will leave when his contract expires this summer. Edouard Michut declined a permanent Sunderland move and now plays for Fortuna Sittard.
Jack Clarke, a scorer that day, later joined Ipswich, failed to net in the Premier League and has 12 Championship goals this season. Amad Diallo impressed on loan and is now contributing for Manchester United. Abdoullah Ba returned from Dunkerque and has two goals in two National League Cup games for the U21s.
