Alain Thomas, a former Olympique Lyonnais forward, made his professional debut against OM in 1969 and retired at 23. He stayed closely tied to the club thereafter.

Le Progres reports that Thomas played alongside Bernard Lacombe, who became a lifelong friend, and stood by him to the end.

By local measure, if Lyon handed out passports, Thomas would be near the top of the list.

He first played in the street on Place Stalingrad in Lyon’s seventh arrondissement, then joined OL aged nine. He arrived at OL with Raymond Domenech, who was seven.

Away from the pitch he worked on the printing presses at Le Progrès and never sought the limelight, despite predictions of a bright football future.
