Corinthians’ poor run in Copa Super 8 goes on

Corinthians was defeated by Minas Tênis Clube and bid an early farewell to the Super 8 Cup competition. As a result, Timão was unable to shake off its negative track record in the tournament, as the club from Parque São Jorge has never been champion in its four appearances throughout history.

The People’s Team’s first appearance was in the 2019/20 season, when Flamengo came out on top in the quarterfinals, winning 86 x 66. Corinthians returned only in 2022/23, when they beat Minas in the same stage, advanced to the semifinals, but couldn’t withstand the quality of SESI Franca, who won 105 x 90, leaving Timão in fourth place.

The last participation was in 2023/24, when Corinthians again fell in the quarterfinals, facing Unifacisa and losing 84 x 82. Last year, the club did not finish among the top eight in the first round of the Novo Basquete Brasil (NBB) and failed to secure a spot in the knockout tournament, which grants a place in the Basketball Champions League Americas.

Now, Corinthians turns its full focus to the NBB. The competition will resume after the end of the Super 8 Cup, with Timão aiming to improve its position in the standings to gain an advantage in the championship playoffs. The next match will take place on February 7, against Fortaleza Basquete Cearense, at Ginásio Wlamir Marques.
