Africa will be represented by four teams at the U20 World Cup, scheduled to take place in Chile from September 27 to October 19.
The teams are South Africa, the reigning U20 AFCON champions, along with Morocco, Nigeria, and Egypt.
In response to a question from Foot Africa about which African side could go far at the U20 World Cup, Cameroonian journalist William Mfabo shared his thoughts.
First of all, it's important to point out that the tournament will be played under quite unique conditions for the four African representatives, particularly due to the time difference and the weather (cold and humidity). That said, I believe Morocco and Nigeria have the assets needed to go deep into the tournament and perhaps follow in the footsteps of Ghana, the 2009 U20 World Cup champions.Moroccan football has gained tremendous competitiveness on the international stage, as shown by their 4th place at the 2022 World Cup and the bronze medal won at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. As for Nigeria, they have a deep-rooted tradition in youth competitions. They even reached the final in 1989 and 2005, and finished third in 1985.Let's not forget that South Africa are the reigning African champions and could well be the big attraction of this 24th edition of the U20 World Cup.
Ghana won the 2009 edition of the U20 World Cup, defeating Brazil on penalties after a goalless draw in the final (0-0).
