The Swedish attacking midfielder only managed three goals in 28 Championship appearances

Ex-Plymouth Argyle attacking midfielder Rami Al Hajj has struggled to make any big impact since departing Home Park for Danish side Silkeborg IF in July.

The writing was on the wall for Al Hajj's Argyle exit well before the summer transfer window opened.

Head coach Tom Cleverley made it clear that the Swede was surplus to requirements, revealing that the player had expressed his desire to leave both the club and England entirely.

Cleverley also stated that Al Hajj's qualities "suit other countries" and that he would not be part of the Austrian pre-season camp.

Whilst plying his trade on Devon's south coast, the former Odense Boldklub star only managed three goals in 28 Championship appearances - not really living up to his reported £840k price tag.

Rami Al Hajj flopped at Plymouth Argyle

Al Hajj's move to Home Park in August last year was seen as a coup for then-manager Wayne Rooney's Pilgrims. The former England captain was full of praise for his new signing, describing him as "a creative, skillful attacking midfielder who will complement our forward line perfectly."

Director of Football Neil Dewsnip added that the Swedish player would "make a positive impact on the Championship."

However, the reality proved starkly different. Out of his three strikes in 29 appearances across all competitions, his most memorable contribution came on his full debut, scoring the first in a 3-1 home win against Luton Town.

The midfielder's struggles weren't helped by Argyle's own dire form in the second-tier. Rooney later admitted that Al Hajj was "more of a flair player" who needed to be "in a team who plays football."

Rami Al Hajj's barren spell continues in Denmark with Silkeborg IF

Since completing his permanent transfer to Silkeborg IF on 11 July 2025, Al Hajj has certainly endured a torrid time in the Danish Superligaen - the league he played in before joining Argyle.

The attacking midfielder has featured in nine league matches, starting just six, and has failed to contribute a single goal or assist despite spending 508 minutes on the pitch.

His struggles extend beyond domestic football as well, with four additional appearances in the Conference League qualifying rounds also resulting in zero goal contributions.

The only goal contribution he has at this stage (24th September), is scoring against fifth-division side Kolding Boldklub in the Danish Cup.

In the Superligaen, Al Hajj has managed five shots on target in 13 attempts and created a mere 8 chances - Silkeborg find themselves in 10th place after nine games played, on ten points.

Truthfully, Plymouth's decision to include a sell-on clause in the player's Silkeborg deal appears increasingly optimistic given his current form.

The club's admission that they "broke even" with other departing players while remaining vague about Al Hajj's fee suggests they made a loss on their investment.

With Al Hajj's contract at Silkeborg running until 2029, the Danish club will be hoping their investment eventually pays off. However, based on current evidence, Plymouth made the right call in allowing the midfielder to seek opportunities elsewhere.
