The ex-Hoops right-back retired in 2022, but recent reports from outlet Expressen suggest the former Swedish international could take on a behind-the-scenes role at Vasteras, who have just returned to the Allsvenskan in Sweden.

Vasteras’ current sporting director and head coach, Kalle Karlsson, has emerged as a target for Hammarby as they look to replace Kim Hellberg.

The 37-year-old recently took over as head coach at Middlesbrough in the English Championship, succeeding Rob Edwards who controversially joined Wolves.

As a result, Swedish media have described Lustig as “highly sought after,” and he is reportedly a leading contender for the position if Karlsson departs the club this winter.

Lustig joined VSK last year in a part-time coaching capacity, primarily focusing on academy players, and the former full-back is now being considered for a promotion within the club. He enjoyed a trophy-laden playing career at Celtic after arriving from Rosenborg in 2012, racking up 273 appearances and 21 goals across all competitions during his time in Scotland.

Instrumental in Celtic’s success under Neil Lennon, Ronny Deila and Brendan Rodgers’ first spell in charge, Lustig collected 16 domestic trophies with the Hoops which included eight Scottish Premiership titles, four Scottish Cups, and four League Cups.

Over a 13-year international career with Sweden, he earned 94 caps and scored six goals, featuring in three European Championships and the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

After hanging up his boots three years ago, Lustig turned to launching his own YouTube channel where he travelled around Sweden playing Golf.

His last video posted was three weeks ago suggesting that maybe there is something in the speculation that Lustig could take a more active role at VSK.

He has revealed that he doesn’t see himself as a coach or manager anytime soon but something like a sporting director or director of football role could interest him.
