The Red Devils return to top-flight action on Saturday lunchtime with a trip to west London, with their embarrassing early Carabao Cup exit at the hands of fourth-tier Grimsby offering Ruben Amorim’s side a clear week following a chaotic 2-1 win over Chelsea last time out.

United were able to bring Matheus Cunha and Mason Mount off the bench in that match after they both recovered from injuries sustained prior to the international break, helping to see out a crucial victory at a rain-soaked Old Trafford in which both Robert Sanchez and Casemiro - who earlier scored what proved to be United’s winning goal - were sent off.

While the latter will serve a one-match suspension against Brentford, Amorim looks to have been handed more good news on the injury front with confirmation from the club that Diogo Dalot returned to full team training on Thursday.

The versatile full-back has been a regular for United under his compatriot and had appeared in every game of the new season before suffering a muscle issue while training with Portugal at the start of September ahead of their 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Armenia and Hungary.

Dalot subsequently withdrew from Roberto Martinez’s squad and missed United’s sobering 3-0 derby defeat by Manchester City in addition to the dramatic win over Chelsea, with Patrick Dorgu and Noussair Mazraoui lining up as the starting wing-backs in Amorim’s divisive 3-4-2-1 formation.

However, he now looks to be in contention to face Brentford, who have won only one of their first five league games under new head coach Keith Andrews.

Dalot’s return would leave the banned Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez as United’s only known absentees ahead of their visit to the Gtech Community Stadium, where they lost 4-3 in a thriller back in May.

However, Argentine defender Martinez was back out on the grass at Carrington last week as he continues to step up his comeback from knee surgery in February.

"It's really important,” Amorim said of Martinez’s latest step. “When you have that injury, you have that time where you recover a lot of things really hard, then there is the boring part where it looks like you don't go to the next step.

“We miss a lot Licha [Martinez], especially in this moment, we miss his aggression in everything he does, we miss him.

“But he's always there in every meeting. In training, he sometimes finishes his and stays to watch the training. We need Licha in this team.”

Amorim will give a further update on United’s latest team news at his pre-Brentford press conference on Friday afternoon.
