Returning to the Santiago Bernabeu after their disastrous set of weeks away from home, Real Madrid knew well the reaction they would receive from the fans.
The turbulent past week, after all, saw them lose out on the Supercopa de Espana to Barcelona in the finale, sack Xabi Alonso from his position, and then crash out of the Copa del Rey, all in just a matter of days.
Last evening’s clash against Levante, unsurprisingly, saw the fans produce some of the loudest boos and jeers towards their own players for the terrible football they have been producing, and rightfully so, given how the team has looked average at best.
Now, as confirmed by COPE in a recent report, the Real Madrid players were deeply affected by the way in which fans treated them yesterday, despite the fact that they saw it coming.

The feeling within the dressing room and administration of the club is one of sadness, surprise, and disappointment towards how the supporters reacted, and nobody expected a protest of such scale from the fans.
“If you only applaud in glory, but vanish in defeat you were never one of us,” is what the dressing room internally felt about the same.
The dressing room felt sad for how they were greeted, surprised because of how they did not expect the negative reaction to continue through the ninety minutes to virtually make it an away game, and disappointed because they feel the fans do not support them in their lows.
It remains to be seen how much longer the strained relationship lasts between the players and fans, and it will largely depend on the team’s performances and results. As it stands, however, that does not seem to be changing anytime soon.
