Report: What Chelsea did this summer could really help them in January | OneFootball

Chelsea have left cash in reserve for the January window in case they need to strengthen any areas of the squad according to reports.

The Blues had a busy summer in which they made six first team signings, five of which were attackers as the front line underwent a major revamp.

Chelsea also signed a back-up for Marc Cucurella in the form of Jorrel Hato as they plugged an important hole in the squad.

Chelsea leave cash in reserve for January

Despite signing some good players and overall improving the squad, supporters were once again left disappointed that key areas weren’t addressed.

Chelsea opted against signing a goalkeeper, despite the well documented issues with Robert Sanchez, and they turned down the opportunity to sign Mike Maigan after refusing to meet AC Milan’s valuation.

Centre back is also a position many felt needed strengthening, even more so after the Blues lost Levi Colwill to an ACL injury.

Enzo Maresca publicly stated more than once he wanted a new centre back, but he wasn’t granted his wish, even though Chelsea tried hard to sign Dean Huijsen at the start of the summer.

There’s been reports Chelsea could go back in for Maignan in January, and Mail Sport have reported Chelsea have left cash in reserve for January should they decide an area of the squad needs strengthening.

The report adds it wouldn’t be a surprise if the same names that have previously been linked cropped up again.

Does Enzo Maresca have good enough options to get to January?

The decision not to sign a goalkeeper and a replacement for Colwill has already proved costly for the Blues at this early stage of the season.

Defensively the Blues have been all over the place, and have conceded a number of goals from poor individual errors and defensive mistakes, and Maresca will have to hope his current options significantly improve between now and January.
