Vasco have moved to extend Puma Rodríguez’s contract, with a verbal agreement in place and a two-year deal expected to be signed in the coming days. According to Globo.com, only legal formalities remain.

Both parties wanted the renewal. The club valued the full-back’s versatility and quality, widely praised by Fernando Diniz, and he was keen to stay. His camp did not offer him to other teams.

The verbal understanding was reached before the Copa do Brasil final.

Talks first began early in the year but stalled through the first half of the season. By mid-year his stay looked in doubt, and in July he was omitted against Grêmio by technical choice.

The picture then shifted. He stood out in training, earned minutes from the bench and made an impact. When required he became the main alternative to Paulo Henrique, then took the left-back spot when Lucas Piton was injured.

During this spell under Diniz he increased his stock and remained in Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay squad, starting both friendlies in the last FIFA window against Dominican Republic and Uzbekistan.
