2024 Women's AFCON: Tunisia still can't break through against Algeria

Algeria and Tunisia played out a goalless draw (0-0) this Thursday, the 10th, at the Père-Jégo Stadium in Casablanca. The Carthage Eagles' women's side suffered another setback at the end of this North African derby, counting for matchday two in Group B at the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations.

After being beaten 3-0 by Nigeria in the opening match, Tunisia absolutely needed a win tonight against an Algerian side eyeing qualification on this second day. The Greens, who previously edged Botswana (1-0), couldn't find the breakthrough despite enjoying the lion's share of possession.

A balanced contest despite Algerian dominance

The match was defined by Algeria's territorial and technical dominance, as they controlled the ball with 69.9% possession compared to Tunisia's 30.1%. The Greens took charge right from kickoff. Throughout the first half, the Algerians piled on corners and attempts, but couldn't capitalize on their chances against a well-organized Tunisian defense. Despite being under pressure, Tunisia managed to threaten on a few occasions, notably through Sana Guermazi and Samia Aouni, who forced Algerian keeper Chloé N'Gazi into action, but couldn't break her resolve.

The second half saw the intensity ratchet up even further. Tunisia tried to strike on the counter, but their few opportunities—like a long-range free kick from Samia Aouni—failed to trouble Chloé N’Gazi. Algeria ramped up the pressure with repeated forays forward, spearheaded by Inès Boutaleb and Marine Dafeur, but Soulayma Jebrani was outstanding between the posts. The Tunisian goalkeeper's brilliant display earned her the match MVP award.

The duel thus ended in a goalless stalemate. The Greens now have 4 points and keep their hopes alive for qualification against Nigeria. As for Tunisia, they collect their first point of the tournament and will look to the third matchday to determine their fate.
