Lazio are on the cusp of making their fourth first-team signing of the summer, as Josip Sutalo arrives to complete his transfer from Ajax.
The Biancocelesti have already brought in Alfonso Pedraza and Danilho Doekhi on free transfers, while securing Davide Frattesi on loan from Inter Milan with an option to buy. Nevertheless, Gennaro Gattuso still required another defensive reinforcement, especially with Alessio Romagnoli’s fate yet to be decided, and Patric and Samuel Gigot unable to recover from their long-term injuries.
While several players were on Angelo Fabiani’s shortlist, Lazio decided to go all-in on Sutalo, a 26-year-old Croatian international who has been playing his football at Ajax since 2023. Thanks to the two clubs’ excellent relationship (also evidenced by their quick negotiations for Kenneth Taylor’s transfer in January), an agreement was found rather swiftly.
The Dinamo Zagreb youth product will join Lazio on loan for €3 million, with an option to buy for another €7.5 million, thus raising the total cost to €10 million. On Friday evening, Sutalo was spotted at Fiumicino airport in Rome. Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio shared a video showing the player’s arrival on his Instagram account.
Sutalo will thus undergo his medical in the coming hours, while the official announcement will likely arrive on Saturday.
After sorting out their backline, Lazio will now shift their attention towards the striker’s role, which has been their biggest conundrum since the start of the summer. On Thursday, Bamba Dieng landed in Italy to complete a free transfer, but ended up failing a medical. Most sources believe Sassuolo centre-forward Andrea Pinamonti is now the most plausible solution.
