Bosnia and Herzegovina kept their World Cup hopes alive with a commanding 3–1 victory over Qatar in Seattle, securing four points and a strong position among third-placed teams. Kerim Alajbegovic opened the scoring with a brilliant individual goal before Sultan Al-Brake's own goal doubled the lead, and though Hasan Al-Haydos pulled one back, Ermin Mahmic sealed the win late on.
The 18-year-old Alajbegovic was the standout performer, announcing himself on the World Cup stage with a solo effort that beat multiple defenders before finding the corner. Ivan Basic pulled the strings from midfield throughout, while Qatar's attacking efforts were undone by wasteful finishing and an unfortunate deflection. GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from Bosnia and Herzegovina v Qatar.
The 18-year-old delivered the defining moment of the match with his 29th-minute goal, receiving Ivan Basic's pass and dribbling past multiple Qatar defenders before finishing with his right foot into the top corner from outside the area.
Alajbegovic's ambidextrous ability caused problems throughout, using both feet equally effectively to trouble Qatar's defense. His run and pass also set up Sead Kolasinac's cross that led to the own goal, making him central to two of Bosnia's three goals.
Replaced at 82 minutes having produced a match-winning display, the teenager's performance marked him as a genuine prospect and gave Bosnia the platform they needed to secure a crucial victory in their World Cup campaign.
Basic was Bosnia's primary creative force throughout the match, dictating play from central midfield with intelligent distribution and progressive passing, and delivering the perfectly weighted through ball that released Kerim Alajbegovic for the crucial opening goal at 29 minutes.
Earlier in the match, he tested Mahmoud Abunada with a left-footed effort that required a diving save, had another shot blocked by Karim Boudiaf at 19 minutes, and sent one attempt over the bar. His ability to beat the first press with skillful dribbling repeatedly advanced Bosnia into dangerous areas.
The midfielder's all-round control of the midfield proved decisive, and his assist for the opener set the tone for a victory that keeps Bosnia's knockout-stage hopes very much alive after a difficult start to the tournament.
The left-back's evening was defined by the own goal at 34 minutes when Edin Džeko's shot deflected off him past Mahmoud Abunada, catching the goalkeeper wrong-footed and extending Bosnia's lead to 2–0 at a pivotal moment.
Operating on the left side of Qatar's defense, Al-Brake contributed some attacking moments with crosses from the flank and one headed delivery into the box. However, the decisive deflection that gifted Bosnia their second goal overshadowed any positive contributions from his performance.
The own goal came when Qatar were still looking to establish a foothold in the match, and though Hasan Al-Haydos pulled one back shortly after, the damage was done as Bosnia had breathing room that they would not relinquish.
