Andy Carroll has confirmed he was sexually assaulted by former television dance coach Kevin Adams in a new autobiography. Adams was convicted in 2023 and jailed for 20 months.

"Now that Kevin Adams has been named in court documents as my abuser, I can confirm it. Hopefully now I can finally start to put this chapter behind me. This had a devastating impact on my life and loved ones," he told The Sun on Sunday.

Adams had been a dance coach on the BBC show Fame Academy. Carroll says the trauma touched every part of his life, making it hard to focus on football.

Carroll writes that Adams invited himself over to watch a boxing match, and mixed drinks that left him lightheaded. He says he awoke to Adams under the duvet attempting to perform oral sex, struck him, dragged him outside, locked the door, and called police and his nanny. He later worried he might have killed him.

Since publication he has received support from other male victims and says speaking out has been difficult. The messages reinforced for him how vital it is for men to talk when they are ready.

Adams was placed on the Sex Offender Register and is barred from entering the village where Carroll lived.

Carroll hopes his account will empower other survivors to seek help. He continues his career with National League South club Dagenham & Redbridge. He faces a separate trial next January after pleading not guilty to breaching a non-molestation order.
