Luxemburgo, Edmundo and others: how ex-Santos figures fared in the 2026 elections

Five former Santos players and coaches stood for office in Brazil’s 2026 elections on Sunday, four October, but none were elected.
According to Diario Do Peixe, the quintet were Vanderlei Luxemburgo, Edmundo, Marcelinho Carioca, Goleiro Sérgio and Dani Pato.
Vanderlei Luxemburgo ran for the Senate in Tocantins for Podemos and finished seventh with 67,182 votes, 4.12%. The state’s two seats were won by Eduardo Gomes (PL) with 27.26% and Alexandre Guimarães (MDB) with 19.14%. He managed Santos in 1997, 2004, 2006-07 and 2009, winning the 2004 national title, two Paulista titles and the Rio-São Paulo Tournament.
Edmundo stood for federal deputy in Rio de Janeiro with PSDB, polling 35,700 votes, 0.40%. He played for Santos in 2000 on loan from Vasco and finished as the club’s top scorer in the Copa João Havelange with 13 league goals.
Sérgio Luiz de Araújo, known as Goleiro Sérgio, sought a state deputy seat in São Paulo for Solidariedade and received 8,582 votes. He joined Santos in 2009 at 39 after spells with Palmeiras, Flamengo, Portuguesa, Vitória, Santo André, Bahia and Itumbiara, then retired in 2013.
Marcelinho Carioca ran for district deputy in the Federal District with Republicanos, taking 2,224 votes, 0.15%. He featured for Santos in 2001, making 15 appearances and scoring five goals before leaving at the end of the season.
Daniela Sibila Alberton, known as Dani Pato, stood for state deputy in Paraná with MDB and collected 4,154 votes, 0.07%. She previously played for Santos’ Sereias da Vila alongside Marta and Cristiane, joining young and forming part of title-winning squads. In 2024 she was elected a Dois Vizinhos councillor with 799 votes.
