Antonee Robinson’s left-footed volley for the USMNT against Germany at Chicago’s Soldier Field echoed Benny Feilhaber’s 2007 Gold Cup winner, 19 years on. It dragged the U.S. level in a World Cup send-off friendly.
“Brings back great memories of that day and that stadium,” Benny Feilhaber said. He told The Athletic. “What an amazing strike from Antonee, hopefully fuels the US into the World Cup. Mine might’ve been closer to the corner, but I think Antonee beat me for POWER!”
In the 2007 Concacaf Gold Cup final at Soldier Field, he smashed a right-footed volley from distance in the 73rd minute after a looping clearance against Mexico. That strike delivered the trophy and booked the U.S. a place at the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup.
On Saturday, with the U.S. trailing 1-0, Christian Pulisic swung in a corner from the same spot on the Soldier Field turf as the set piece before Feilhaber’s goal. The clearance dropped to Robinson, who met it first time, his fierce volley leaving Oliver Baumann with no chance as the U.S. equalised.
Feilhaber’s effort may have come more from the right channel, but the likeness was unmistakable. For Robinson it was his fifth international goal, and he will be hard-pressed to score a more beautiful one.
