Former Rangers star Andy Halliday believes that the Gers would not improve just by giving the skipper’s armband to Jack Butland instead of James Tavernier.

Tavernier’s performances in a Rangers shirt have been scrutinised for some time, but his displays this season have left some fans asking why he is still in the side, let alone wearing the captain’s armband,

It was yet another unimpressive showing from the veteran on Sunday as his side succumbed to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Kilmarnock to dent a further blow to their chances of catching up with Celtic and Aberdeen.

There have been calls for Tavernier to lose the captain’s armband and for it instead to be handed to goalkeeper Butland.

For former Rangers star Halliday though, that should not be the focus, because Rangers will not improve just by swapping the captain.

“If Jack Butland got the captain’s armband tomorrow, Rangers aren’t going to improve”, Halliday said on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard.

“They aren’t going to improve just because he’s got a cotton band wrapped round his arm.”

Philippe Clement himself is now also coming under pressure as he has been in charge of Rangers for a year and is yet to show signs of closing the gap on Celtic.
