Arrascaeta underwent surgery on Thursday after fracturing his left wrist on Monday, and the operation was successful. The club said in a statement that the procedure finished without complications, he would be observed through the afternoon and could be discharged the same night if his progress remained good. He now faces a race to be fit in November.
The procedure took place at Hospital Copa Star in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, and a plate was inserted in the wrist. The player will continue to be monitored by Flamengo throughout his recovery.
Club medics believe a return in six to eight weeks is realistic, while football director José Boto is hopeful of a shorter timeline.
Boto acknowledged the loss of such an important player always has an impact, called the incident unusual and not the result of contact, and noted injuries cannot always be controlled.
He is out of the Libertadores semi-finals against Estudiantes on 15 and 22 October. There are fears he could even miss a possible final on 28 November in Montevideo, Uruguay.
Head coach Leonardo Jardim must now pick a replacement, with the next test against Santos at Vila Belmiro in the Brasileirão. Jorge Carrascal and Saúl are the leading candidates to start.
