Flamengo have suffered a major blow, with Arrascaeta fracturing his left wrist on Uruguay duty in the 4-1 win over South Korea. He slipped in the first half on Monday, fell awkwardly and landed on his left wrist, then was in clear pain.

According to Coluna Do Fla, tests confirmed the fracture, he is due to land in Rio de Janeiro around 16:00 Brasília time on Wednesday, then will undergo final assessments on Thursday morning before surgery. The club are pessimistic about a return inside six weeks.

Lucas Paquetá is seen as the leading replacement during his recovery, the club-record signing can operate as a central creator. De La Cruz and Jorge Carrascal are also capable in the role.

Samuel Lino has been tried there, having filled in as a No 10 during Flamengo’s training camp in Portugal while the Uruguayan was at the World Cup. Gonzalo Plata has played centrally too, giving Leonardo Jardim another option.

He is expected to miss both Libertadores semi-final matches against Estudiantes (ARG), the first leg on 15 October in La Plata and the return at the Maracanã. Any comeback is being eyed for a potential final on 28 November.
