Bamba Dieng ‘to undergo’ Lazio medical after Rome arrival

Bamba Dieng has arrived in Rome and will undergo a Lazio medical on Thursday ahead of a free transfer, becoming the club’s third free-agent addition after Alfonso Pedraza and Danilho Doekhi.

The 26-year-old landed on Wednesday night after reports earlier in the day of an agreement following the expiry of his Lorient deal. According to Corriere dello Sport, he was close to joining newly promoted Türkiye Super Lig side Amed FK in late July, but that move collapsed amid an alleged knee issue in the medical, so it remains to be seen what Lazio’s checks show.

Dieng is coming off the most prolific season of his career, scoring 15 in 25 for Lorient in all competitions. His earlier numbers were far more modest.

Financial considerations underpin Lazio’s pivot. Claudio Lotito looked at Mauro Icardi, also a free agent, but the 33-year-old did not fancy a switch, aware he would be playing in front of empty seats at the Stadio Olimpico.

A deal for Andrea Pinamonti proved costly too, with Sassuolo only open to a €4.5 million loan. With limited funds left from Mario Gila’s sale, and after paying €5 million to loan Davide Frattesi, Lazio are planning to allocate €3 million for Ajax defender Josip Sutalo on a similar formula, making Dieng the most affordable choice.
