FC Barcelona secured a 2–0 win over CD Guadalajara in their opening match of the Copa del Rey 2025/26 campaign, booking a place in the Round of 16 but not without difficulty.
Facing lower league opposition, the Blaugranes struggled to break through until the 76th minute, when Andreas Christensen stepped up to open the scoring and swing the tie in Barcelona’s favour.
The goal and his assured performance brought Christensen back into the spotlight after several months in a secondary role. It also arrived at a decisive moment for the Danish defender, who is set to turn 30 in April and whose contract with Barcelona expires at the end of the current season.
Injuries and a lack of continuity have limited his minutes over recent campaigns, frequently placing him at the centre of transfer speculation, yet no move has materialised, and he remains a valuable option for Hansi Flick whenever fit.
He recently appeared in an interview with Tipsbladet (via SPORT), one of the channels from his home country, Denmark, and addressed some questions about his future.
When asked about the uncertainty surrounding his future, the Danish centre-back made it clear that this is not something that affects him a lot:
“This uncertainty about my future doesn’t affect me. I’m in a good moment now, and I don’t think I need to change anything in my daily life. Of course, I’d like to have everything under control and know what will happen, but it’s not something that changes my mood or that I talk about constantly. It’s time to give everything I can on the pitch and for that to be enough for me to stay.”
The Dane also made it clear that he does not have any alternative plans in mind:
“I have no idea what Barça want to do. I’m just choosing to focus on being part of the team and playing as much as I can. Right now, I’ll accept whatever comes. At this moment, I haven’t thought about other leagues or anything like that. There is no plan B.”
However, for the medium-term, Christensen had a desired destination in mind:
“In five or six years, I’d like to return to Brøndby. But everything depends on my situation and that of my family. Right now, I feel I still have something to offer at a very high level. In an ideal world, I can see a return to Brøndby being possible.”
Despite his stance, rumours continue to circulate. For now, however, the message from the player is clear. His priority is to perform, help Barcelona when called upon, and earn the chance to extend his stay. Only if the club decides against renewing his contract will the door open to a new chapter elsewhere.
