Barcelona’s sporting department, led by Deco, continue to plan for the future as they look to strengthen key areas of the squad over the coming years.

While the club’s immediate priorities remain signing a striker and bringing Joao Cancelo back, work is also being done behind the scenes to secure young talents who could become important figures in the long term.

One of those players is Jorge Salinas, the 19-year-old Racing Santander defender who impressed throughout the season and helped his side earn promotion to La Liga.

Barcelona view the Spaniard as an attractive market opportunity, believing he has the potential to become a key player in the years ahead.

June 30 deadline to seal the deal for cheap

Now, according to MARCA, the main issue surrounding any deal for Salinas concerns his release clause.

The 19-year-old left-back spent the season registered with Racing’s reserve side, meaning his original release clause stood at €4 million.

However, Racing argue that because of his extensive involvement with the first team and his status as an undisputed starter, the clause should effectively be considered €8 million.

Time is becoming a factor. From 1 July, his release clause will automatically rise to €16 million, putting pressure on Barcelona to act quickly if they want to secure his signature at a lower price.

One for the future

Although Salinas has spent most of the 2025/26 campaign operating at left-back, he started out as a centre-back and has effectively been converted into the new role.

His versatility and strong performances have caught the attention of the Catalan club, who must now move swiftly and secure a deal before June 30 to avoid paying the inflated release clause.

As such, Barcelona are keen to conclude the operation before the end of the month.

The final fee is expected to fall somewhere between €4 million and €8 million, with one possible solution involving Salinas joining Barcelona before immediately returning to Racing Santander on loan.

Such an arrangement would allow the young defender to continue gaining valuable experience in La Liga while remaining part of Barcelona’s long-term plans.

With the June 30 deadline approaching and the player’s clause set to double in less than two weeks, the coming days could prove decisive in determining whether Salinas becomes another investment for Barcelona’s future.
