Benfica will hold summer talks with Nicolás Otamendi over another contract extension, with a further one-year deal not ruled out. The captain signed on for only one more season last June.
Under José Mourinho, the centre-back has remained a regular starter and, fitness permitting, could stay a first-team pick in 2026/27, Record writes. He continues to underline his value on the pitch.
He is about to turn 38, with his primary aim to play at this year's World Cup. After the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico, he will weigh up whether to stay at Benfica or pursue a new challenge.
A return to River Plate has been floated, a club he holds in high regard. No definitive call has been made on next season, and his next steps remain open.
This season he has made 37 appearances for Benfica, 20 in Liga Portugal Betclic, 12 in the Champions League, two in the Taça de Portugal, two in the Taça da Liga and one in the Supertaça. Across 3,330 minutes he has scored three goals. He is valued at 1 million euros.
